Sadd earned the win. Had we had an additional 10 minutes, we could have at least tied . I am satisfied with (Wehdat’s) performance, especially given their gradual improvement. We hvae to turn this negative result into something positive,” Wehdat coach, Abdullah Abu Zema, said in  a press conference following Friday’s game.

“The new season is about to start in and so we will look at the Asian championship as preparation for the future,” Abu Zema remarked.

Meanwhile, Al-Sadd’s Spanish coach, Xavi Hernandez, commended his team’s performance, saying: “I’m happy we scored three points against a really good team. I would like to congratulate  Wehdat for playing so well; their defense was organized.”

“We took control of several stages of the match, and when you score the first goal, it becomes easier to win. We struggled a little in the second half due to (Wehdat’s) the corner kicks...but we are happy we won this tough game.

Wehdat still has two matches remaining against Iran’s Foolad and Saudi’s Al-Nassr on April 26 and April 29, respectively. Those matches will not however redeem the team’s shot at qualification.

Nassr is in the lead of Group D   (8pts.), followed by Sadd (7pts.), Foolad (5pts.) and Wehdat (1pt.) in second, third and fourth places, respectively.
