Bayern remain top on goal difference (+11) ahead of Dortmund. Both sides are on unbeaten runs. Bayern have now gone 21 matches unbeaten, since their semi-final defeat to defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in April.
Dortmund have gone seven matches unbeaten in all competitions.
In Mainz, Joshua Kimmich opened the scoring in the 14th minute, striking powerfully after receiving the ball from England's Harry Kane on the edge of the box.
The home side thought they had equalised with a header from South Korea's Jae-sung Lee after veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer came out poorly to a free kick, but the video assistant referee (VAR) disallowed the goal (40).
Neuer appeared to have injured his foot, and was quickly replaced by Jonas Urbig just seconds before the end of the first half.
The match was also a milestone for Neuer, who became the oldest outfield player to appear for Bayern in the Bundesliga, at 40 years and 225 days. He is also the third-oldest goalkeeper to play in the Bundesliga, after Uli Stein (42 years and 170 days) and Toni Schumacher (42 years and 73 days), according to the Opta statistics service.

Substitute Philipp Tietz pulled one back for Mainz in the third minute of stoppage time.
In Dortmund, the home side were without Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy through injury, and then lost Austrian Karim Adeyemi's teammate Carney Chukwuemeka to injury in the 34th minute.
Midfielder Felix Nmecha took on the role of goalscorer. He opened the scoring in the 55th minute with a powerful low shot from outside the box into the right corner, and sealed the hosts' victory with another well-struck effort from outside the area in the 71st minute.
It is the second time this season that the German international has scored twice in one match, following his double against Paderborn in matchday three. He has not scored in any other Bundesliga match this season apart from those two games.

In Paderborn, the hosts drew 2-2 with visitors Eintracht Frankfurt. Raphael Obermair scored for the home side in the 45th minute, and substitute Marvin Pieringer added a penalty in the 73rd minute.
