Social media platforms have become an integral part of our lives. They allow us to stay connected with friends and family, learn about current events, and express ourselves. However, social media platforms are also global companies, and they operate under different laws and regulations in different countries. This can lead to a patchwork of different standards for social media platforms, which can make it difficult to combat discrimination, misinformation, and other harmful content. Especially now with what is happening in Gaza, people are taking to social media more and more, to learn, to debunk, and make their voices more heard. Some Palestinians would argue, that social media, which is one of the only ways they can ‘help’ has become kryptonite as it censors content.

Developing and implementing unified international standards for social media platforms will be challenging but worth the effort. Cooperation among governments, social media companies, and civil society organizations is crucial.
Discrimination on social media platforms can have severe consequences, such as social isolation, psychological distress, and even physical harm. Moreover, it can undermine democracy and social cohesion. There's an increasing demand for international policies to address discriminatory behavior on these platforms and ensure equal treatment for all users. These policies should tackle critical issues:

  1. Definition of Discrimination: Clearly defining discrimination on social media platforms is essential. A comprehensive understanding is needed to develop effective countermeasures.

  2. Responsibilities of Social Media Platforms: Social media platforms have a responsibility to provide a safe and inclusive environment for users. Determining the extent of their responsibility is crucial.

  3. Enforcement of International Policy: Implementing international policies on discrimination poses a challenge due to the global nature of these platforms. An effective enforcement mechanism is essential to ensure compliance with international law.

Unified international standards for social media platforms are imperative for several reasons:

  1. Protection of Human Rights: These standards can safeguard users' human rights, including freedom of expression and freedom from discrimination, regardless of their location.

  2. Combat Misinformation: International standards can help combat misinformation by requiring the removal of harmful content and providing transparency about content sources.

  3. Promote Competition and Innovation: Such standards can create a level playing field for social media companies, fostering competition and innovation.

Implementing these standards requires comprehensive measures:

  • To protect human rights, social media platforms should adopt policies against discrimination and hate speech based on international human rights laws. They should provide clear procedures for users to report such content.

  • To combat misinformation, platforms should promptly and effectively remove false, misleading, or harmful content, alongside informing users about content sources.

  • To promote competition and innovation, platforms should be transparent about their algorithms, provide users with control over their privacy settings, and allow for interoperability.

Raising awareness through social media is an effective strategy to pressure social networks to change their discriminatory policies:

  • Share stories of those affected by discriminatory policies.

  • Educate the public on the various ways social networks can be used for discrimination.

  • Use relevant hashtags and tag the social media platforms in your posts.

  • Be persistent in your efforts, as change takes time and dedication.

It is essential to involve all stakeholders in the development of international policies, including social media platforms, civil society organizations, and governments, to ensure effectiveness and respect for users' rights.

Social media platforms can be a force for good, but they also pose risks. Unified international standards can create a more inclusive online environment. Alongside international policies, national and local actions, such as passing anti-discrimination laws and supporting organizations combating discrimination, are also crucial.

Individuals can contribute by reporting discriminatory content and raising awareness of the issue.
