Jordan’s climate has not always been the same as it is today. Over the immense span of geological time, the land that is now Jordan experienced major environmental and climatic changes.اضافة اعلان

Evidence preserved in rocks, fossils, plants, and Jordanian amber provides valuable clues about these ancient environments.

My studies of Jordanian amber have led me to consider the amber as a kind of natural time capsule. The plants and other organisms preserved in it can help us understand the environments in which they lived millions of years ago.

One important indication is the presence of plants that appear adapted to a warm and humid environment. Some ancient leaves had structures that could help drain water, while their relatively thin leaves could have been associated with conditions of abundant rainfall and high transpiration. Such observations suggest that parts of the region now forming Jordan once experienced a much warmer and wetter climate than today.

The climate of Jordan was also influenced by the changing position of the continents. Through geological time, continental drift and the movement of tectonic plates changed the position of landmasses and, consequently, their climates. A region can move from one climatic zone to another over millions of years.

The formation of mountains and valleys was another major factor. Tectonic movements raised mountains and contributed to the formation of the Jordan Valley and other major landforms. These changes affected winds, rainfall, drainage, vegetation, and the distribution of living organisms.

Plants themselves provide examples of adaptation to changing conditions. As climates became drier in some periods, plants with thorny leaves or other water-conserving characteristics became better adapted to the new environment. Plants could also move toward valleys and watercourses where moisture was more readily available.

The great geological faults associated with the Jordan Valley may also have played a role in providing protected environments for some plants when temperatures became colder.

Mountains, valleys, faults, and water sources together created different local environments, allowing some organisms to survive climatic changes.

Volcanic activity is another natural factor that can influence climate. Volcanic eruptions release ash and gases into the atmosphere and can temporarily affect temperature and rainfall. Over geological time, repeated volcanic activity has therefore been one of the natural forces capable of influencing Earth’s environment.

Changes in the Earth’s axis and its movements through space can also affect the distribution and intensity of sunlight received by different parts of the planet. Solar activity itself changes over time, including cycles of approximately 11 years, although these short-term cycles are different from the much longer geological changes that have shaped Earth’s climate.

Large meteorite impacts have also affected Earth’s environment. Major impacts can inject enormous quantities of dust and other material into the atmosphere, reducing sunlight and producing severe environmental changes. Such events demonstrate that climate can sometimes be influenced by sudden events as well as by gradual geological processes.

Therefore, the history of Jordan’s climate cannot be understood from one factor alone. Continental drift, tectonic movements, mountain building, valleys and faults, volcanic activity, changes in Earth’s movements, variations in solar activity, and major meteorite impacts have all been natural forces capable of influencing the Earth’s environment.

The Jordanian amber record adds another important dimension to this story. The organisms preserved in amber provide a direct glimpse of ancient life and vegetation. By studying these remains carefully and comparing them with modern organisms, we can gain a better understanding of how the environment of Jordan has changed through geological time.

Jordan today has a  predominantly dry climate, but the geological record reminds us that this was not always the case. The land beneath our feet has passed through very different climates and environments during Earth’s long history.
