Speaking at a press conference in Tripoli, Karimeh did not specify how many people may still be trapped beneath the debris in the Bab al-Tabbaneh area, north of the city.
Karimeh said, “Today we met as a municipal council, and we consider the council’s resignation to be at the disposal of the Minister of Interior.”
He added, “This problem exceeds the capacity of the Tripoli municipality… every drop of blood that continues to be shed in the city of Tripoli is the responsibility of the state.”
Earlier, the director of the Lebanese Civil Defense said that the two collapsed buildings were home to 22 people.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that rescue teams, along with residents, have so far managed to pull three people alive from under the rubble.
