The Israeli military announced on Sunday that its ground operations in Lebanon are expanding into additional areas after Israeli forces crossed the Litani River in southern Lebanon.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the Israeli military spokesperson said Israeli troops had crossed the Litani River and expanded operations against Hezbollah to areas north of the river. The spokesperson added that military activities are currently being extended to further locations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday that Israeli forces had crossed the river, located approximately 30 kilometers from the border, and that a large portion of southern Lebanon had become a combat zone despite a declared ceasefire.
The military said that several days earlier it had carried out a “large-scale operation” in the Nabatieh Heights and the Wadi Al-Slouqi area as part of efforts to strengthen operational control in southern Lebanon and eliminate what it described as a direct threat to communities in northern Israel, including Metula.
According to the statement, operations are now expanding into additional areas, with a significant number of troops participating in an offensive aimed at extending the forward defensive line.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam accused Israel of pursuing a “scorched-earth policy” against Lebanon.
Clashes between Israel and Hezbollah have continued on an almost daily basis despite a declared ceasefire that has been in place since April 17, though both sides have accused each other of violating the truce.
