Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa told Axios that Israel needs to change its policies, arguing that its current approach is creating additional problems in the region in the name of security. He said mutual respect and economic and trade cooperation offer the best path toward building stable relations with neighboring countries.

Asked whether he understood Israeli concerns following the October 7 attacks, al-Sharaa said he recognized what happened to some civilians that day, but argued that “it is not possible for all policies to be based on an incident that happened in history.”
He said the October 7 events should not determine Israel’s policy toward Syria, while pointing to the deaths of more than 70,000 people in the Gaza Strip, including women and children.
Al-Sharaa said Israel “needs to change its policy,” arguing that its current policies are destabilizing surrounding areas and generating additional threats rather than enhancing its security.
He also questioned the rationale behind Israeli strikes on Syria, noting that Syria had been subjected to Israeli bombardment for two years, including attacks on the presidential palace on two occasions, as well as strikes targeting airports and military facilities.
Al-Sharaa said achieving security requires respecting the security of others. He added that Syria’s relations with the United States, Britain, Gulf countries, Iraq and Lebanon have been successful, while “the problem is with Israel, not with Syria.”
Recent reporting has indicated that Washington has been seeking to support de-escalation between Israel and Syria, while Syrian officials have also called for political and security solutions to tensions between the two countries.
