Sweden’s left-wing opposition bloc, led by Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson, won Sunday’s parliamentary election by a narrow margin, according to figures from the Swedish electoral authorities.

The left-wing bloc secured 176 seats, compared with 173 seats for the right-wing bloc led by outgoing conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Kristersson announced his resignation on Thursday after the election result. In a letter published on his X account, he said the parliamentary speaker would now need to take the necessary steps to form a new government.
“To ensure that this work begins without delay, I hereby request to be relieved of my duties as prime minister,” Kristersson wrote.
The election had been closely contested, with the centre-left opposition campaigning under Andersson and Kristersson seeking another term as prime minister. AFP had reported ahead of the vote that polls had indicated a lead for the centre-left bloc, while the governing centre-right parties had narrowed the gap in the final weeks of the campaign.
