Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled that the government is violating a court order requiring it to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to resume visits to Palestinian prisoners.
The court ruled on Sunday that the Israeli government has failed to comply with its order requiring the resumption of Red Cross visits to Palestinian prisoners held in facilities operated by the Israel Prison Service and the Israeli military.
Supreme Court President Isaac Amit, Deputy President Noam Sohlberg and Justice Daphne Barak-Erez ordered the Israeli government to clarify by October 11 whether all necessary measures to resume the visits had been completed and to provide updated information on scheduled or completed visits.
The judges wrote in their ruling that “the practical meaning of the judgment” is that the respondents are required to allow Red Cross visits to detention facilities “as quickly as required,” noting that more than three months had passed since the original ruling was issued.
The decision followed a petition filed by four human rights organizations, which argued that the Israeli government had violated the Supreme Court’s ruling by failing to comply with the judicial order issued in June.
