Nearly two years after its launch, Meta’s Threads platform is finally rolling out Direct Messaging (DM) functionality — a much-requested feature by users. The announcement came from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, signaling a shift in the platform's direction toward enhanced user engagement and independence.

Previously, Threads relied on a clunky workaround that required users to share posts via Instagram DMs — a method criticized for its inconvenience and for forcing users to switch apps, especially problematic when trying to message people not on Threads.
The new feature is currently being piloted in three countries: Hong Kong, Argentina, and Thailand, with broader expansion expected soon.
Although Meta had previously expressed hesitation about building a separate messaging system for Threads, the company now appears to be embracing a more independent infrastructure. For now, the DM feature supports only one-on-one conversations, with no group messaging or the richer features available in Instagram or Messenger.
This development marks a strategic effort by Meta to position Threads as a more self-contained social platform, especially amid growing competition in the social media space.
