OpenAI is preparing to combine the chat and work features within ChatGPT, a step that lets users ask questions and carry out complex tasks from a single interface, without switching between different tabs. The move follows a similar step taken by Anthropic.

OpenAI is making changes to how the ChatGPT app handles conversations and more complex tasks. It plans to merge the "Chat" and "Work" tabs into a unified experience, allowing users to ask questions and complete tasks from one place, without switching between different interfaces.
The change will initially be available to a select group of users before being gradually rolled out more widely.
The step follows a similar move by Anthropic in September, when it merged conversation and collaborative work functions into its AI assistant Claude within a single interface. This lets users talk to the assistant, carry out tasks and create projects from the same place.
A unified interface for conversation and task execution
ChatGPT currently offers two separate tabs, one for chat and one for work. The first is used for everyday conversations, answering questions and exchanging ideas, while the second is designated for more complex tasks such as conducting research, creating presentations and developing websites, among other work.
Under the new change, users will be able to start a normal conversation, then ask ChatGPT to carry out practical tasks directly from the same interface, without moving to a separate section.
The unified experience will also allow files to be added and users to benefit from software integrations connected to external services, as well as assigning the assistant to work within different projects and tracking their progress.
The merger is expected to make project management easier and make it simpler to track stages of execution, instead of constantly moving between sections of the app depending on the nature of the task.
The change aims to make interaction with the AI assistant more cohesive, so that users can move from raising an idea or discussing a topic to carrying out the tasks related to it within a single experience.
Codex will remain a standalone service
Despite merging the chat and work features, OpenAI confirmed that Codex, its tool for programming and software development, will remain available as a standalone experience within the desktop app.
However, the company is also preparing a change to the usage limits available to subscribers.
Starting December 2026, ChatGPT and Codex will share a unified usage allowance for subscribers on the Plus, Pro and Business plans.
OpenAI explained that most users will not notice a significant difference from this change, though some may have to wait for usage limits to reset more frequently, depending on the model used and the volume of consumption.
By contrast, regular conversations that use instant mode will not count toward the usage allowance shared between the two services.
OpenAI has not yet announced a specific date for making the unified chat and work experience available to all users, saying only that its rollout will begin gradually for select groups before expanding later.
