Sports psychology is not limited to dealing with professional athletes, but also extends to dealing with children or amateurs by motivating them to play sports and creating the right environment to enjoy it. Physical exercise alone is not enough to make a player successful.

Psychologist Saeed Al-Karmi, who previously worked for the Jordan Taekwondo Federation, told Jordan News: “Psychotherapy should be distinguished from the process of mental strength training, as psychotherapy steps in to solve a problem suffered by the player, while training is important to improve performance, increase concentration, and control the level of stress.”

Karmi cited the experience of Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka and American swimmer Michael Phelps to emphasize the importance of the psychological factor, as both have seen positive changes in their performance and lifestyles as a result. “The sports psychologist relies on the use of several techniques such as imagining or visualizing, talking with oneself, and relaxation methods, to reach a level of psychological stability without which the player cannot succeed and achieve.”

Karmi, who is completing his doctorate in sports psychology and founded a player management company nearly 10 years ago, voiced his appreciation for the support he received from national coach Faris Al-Assaf during his time at the taekwondo federation, as well as sports commentator Samer Taha, and the support of his family and friends.

Recovering from injuries, relieving psychological pressure on players, following training, and helping players overcome fear or sports violence are among the tasks of a sports psychologist undertakes to help players improve their athletic performance and level of achievement, Karmi explained. Other tasks include boosting a player’s self-confidence, cooperation and respect for regulations and laws.
