Scientists at Australia’s RMIT University have developed eye drops capable of delivering protective compounds directly to the retina, an area previously accessible only through painful injections.

The university’s website announced the development of these new drops, which are based on the antioxidant lutein extracted from the “jackfruit.” Laboratory tests on cells and animals showed that the formulation can reach the back of the eye and protect the retina from damage.
Researchers explained that the drops are particularly promising for preventing age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults, as well as other serious retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy.
Currently, patients rely on regular intraocular injections to treat these conditions—a painful procedure with potential complications. The new technology could allow patients to use home-administered drops in the future, reducing the burden on both patients and doctors and providing a safer and easier treatment option.
The researchers noted that the work is still in its early stages, with trials so far limited to cells and animals, but they plan to start human clinical trials through collaborative projects with medical clinics. — Lenta.ru
