He added in a press statement that inspection campaigns on bakeries are ongoing to ensure compliance with prices and the availability of bread, noting that violations remain minimal thanks to continuous monitoring.

Al-Barmawi stated that storage capacity for wheat and barley will increase to 2.3 million tons before the end of the year, with the completion of new storage facilities in Al-Qatraneh with a total capacity of 600,000 tons, enabling each of the two commodities to be stored for up to 12 months.

He explained that the ministry follows a continuous strategy of purchasing wheat and barley from multiple sources to maintain and stabilize national reserves.

During its Sunday session chaired by Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan, the Cabinet decided to extend the freeze on bread prices until December 31, 2026, while continuing to provide financial support to bakeries. The expected subsidy for wheat (bread) in 2026 will reach approximately JD 109 million, out of JD 171 million allocated to support wheat and barley production.

The decision aims to maintain stable bread prices and prevent them from being affected by the rise in global wheat prices and production costs, in addition to continuing support for traditional stone bakeries—numbering around 1,100 nationwide.

The decision comes as part of the government’s approach to continue supporting strategic commodities and strengthening the social safety network outlined in the 2026 draft budget.

The cost of one ton of wheat stands at JD 252, while mills purchase it at JD 139, meaning the government bears the subsidy difference of JD 113 per ton to keep bread prices stable, in addition to the monthly support provided to stone bakeries to preserve their production costs.
