The Better Work program is a partnership between the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation.

The memorandum aims to enhance cooperation between the two parties to improve economic performance of industrial establishments — especially the leather and garment industries — in order to improve their competitiveness and raise their commitment to decent work standards, and develop sector strategies.

Ehab Qadri, a member of the chamber’s board of directors, and the representative of the leather and garments industrial sector, emphasized the importance of this memorandum, which continues years of cooperation between the sector and the “Better Work” program.

He said the program played a major role in improving leather and garment factories’ level of compliance to all decent work standards.

This has reflected on the sector’s overall performance and in its exports to the US in particular.

Qadri said that the new memorandum includes essential points that will contribute to the development of the sector’s performance and its qualitative improvement in the coming years, through its support for the establishment and development of an integrated strategy.

The strategy aims to contribute to creating a roadmap for the development and growth of the sector.

He also noted the comprehensiveness of the new memorandum, which includes small and medium enterprises in the garments sector that are not affiliated with the “Better Work” program, offering them advisory services and training in order to expand the user base to achieve maximum benefit.

Tariq Abu Qaoud, director of the “Better Work” Program at the ILO, pointed to the importance of permanent and continuous cooperation between the “Better Work” program and the Jordan Chamber of Industry.

He noted that the project aims to enhance the exchange of experiences between the ILO and leather and garments firms, providing the necessary technical consultations for the sector in order to improve its productivity and develop industrial systems in the areas of employment and exports.

Qaderi said that developing an integrated strategy for the sector is a qualitative leap to institutionalize work and enhance the sector’s performance.

He also praised the valuable effort made by the ILO through its regional office in Jordan to support national industry and try to reach the highest levels of progress and prosperity in various fields.

He also thanked the minister of industry, trade and supply for the efforts made to always support the industrial sector, and the continued cooperation and partnership with the private sector in general and the industrial sector in particular.
