The meeting was requested by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states currently on the Council: Algeria, Guyana, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, and Somalia. The session is expected to be chaired by South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.
Today’s meeting comes amid a number of major developments, including Israel’s launch of an operation to seize Gaza City; the Security Council’s failure to adopt a draft resolution on the situation in Gaza due to a U.S. veto; and recent announcements by several UN member states recognizing the State of Palestine.
Security Council sessions differ from those of the General Assembly, whose general debate opens today with the participation of more than 140 presidents and prime ministers, in addition to dozens of ministers and officials.
