Trump will meet with his national security and foreign policy teams. Axios added that "the meeting will address the current deadlock in negotiations with Iran and the possible options for the next stages of the conflict."

For its part, ABC News quoted U.S. officials involved in the preparations, stating that "the Trump administration is showing growing confidence in the impact of its naval blockade on Iranian ports, contrasted by increasing skepticism regarding the ability of current Iranian negotiators to achieve the desired results."

Furthermore, Axios reported that Iran has conveyed a new proposal to the United States aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war, with the condition that negotiations over the nuclear file take place at a later date.

ABC confirmed, citing one of its sources, that the terms proposed by Tehran appear to be "well below the red lines set by the administration."

Attempts to revive negotiations, which were hosted in the Pakistani capital earlier in April, have so far failed.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin is meeting on Monday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who continues his diplomatic push to rally support for his country in the face of Washington's pressure.
