US President Donald Trump on Monday denounced Brazil’s election as “rigged,” while his ally Flavio Bolsonaro called for the results to be annulled after leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the vote.
Lula, 81, made a remarkable comeback after losing to Bolsonaro in the first round of the election. The defeat prompted the left to intensify its activities in the streets and on social media, helping Lula secure a fourth presidential term.
According to official results, Lula won around 51.8% of the vote, compared with 48.2% for Bolsonaro, defeating his rival by a margin of 4.4 million votes in an outcome that defied expectations.
Right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, 45, the son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, challenged the decision to extend voting by two hours nationwide due to transportation problems in some cities. The extension was requested by Lula.
