An Iranian military official stated on Saturday that the resumption of war with the United States is a "distinct possibility," amid stalled peace talks and President Donald Trump’s criticism of Iran’s latest negotiation proposal.

The Iranian Fars News Agency quoted Mohammad Jafar Asadi, Deputy Head of Inspection at the Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters (the central command of the Armed Forces), saying: "The renewal of conflict between Iran and the United States is a likely scenario. Facts have shown that the United States does not abide by any promises or agreements."
Yesterday, President Trump threatened that the U.S. would resume strikes on Iran if a deal is not reached, stating, "We want to close this chapter once and for all." He added that the U.S. would not withdraw prematurely only to have "the problem resurface in three years."
Trump emphasized that "irrational actors" cannot be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, asserting, "We must ensure Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon." He further claimed that the U.S. has decimated Iranian military capabilities, stating that Iran once had 159 warships and "all of them are currently at the bottom of the sea."
White House Declaration
Despite the rhetoric, the White House stated on Friday that it considers the war with Iran to be "over." The administration officially notified Congress that it views the conflict as concluded, even with the continued presence of U.S. forces in the region.
The tension comes as Iran submitted a negotiation proposal near the end of a 60-day deadline, after which Trump would theoretically need to seek congressional authorization to continue military operations.
Earlier, the official Iranian news agency (IRNA) reported that "Iran submitted its latest proposal for negotiations to Pakistan, acting as the mediator with the U.S., on Thursday night," without providing further details.
However, the U.S. President expressed dissatisfaction with the proposal while talks remains deadlocked despite the ongoing ceasefire. Trump told reporters: "At this moment, I am not satisfied with what they are offering."
The White House quoted Trump reiterating that Iran will never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon and that negotiations are ongoing to ensure U.S. national security in both the short and long term.
