Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said on Tuesday that he would seek the Defense Ministry in the next government, about a month before the country’s legislative elections.

“The reason I am putting myself forward is that the time has come to change the prevailing mindset within the Israeli military,” Ben Gvir said at a press conference in Jerusalem.
Ben Gvir, a key figure in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, added: “The time has come to change Israel’s security doctrine, with one goal: achieving a decisive victory on all fronts.”
The minister presented a “security plan” that includes “encouraging voluntary emigration” of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, disarming the Palestinian Authority, and increasing support for Israeli soldiers.
Earlier in September, Ben Gvir presented a proposal aimed at removing Gaza’s Palestinian population and sending them abroad.
His announcement that he would seek the defense portfolio drew condemnation from Israeli opposition figures.
Gadi Eisenkot, a candidate for prime minister, accused his main rival, Netanyahu, in a post on X of having “lost his mind” by accepting “the criminal Ben Gvir” into his coalition. This characterization is Eisenkot’s own statement, not an independent assessment.
Ben Gvir has previously faced more than 50 charges in his youth related to incitement to hatred or violence, according to AFP.
