AMMAN — Jordan ranked 34th globally and 6th in the Arab world according to the Global Unemployment Rate Index (GURI) 2021, which is issued annually by the UN Organization for Human Development, according to the organization’s website.اضافة اعلان

Of the 208 countries participating in the index, Jordan was down 15 places, compared to 2020, when it was 19th globally out of 179 participating countries.

A report issued by the Department of Statistics, entitled “Jordan in International Indicators”, attributed the high unemployment rate to the existence of a difference between the prevailing wages in the labor market and the asking wages. Other factors included an imbalance in the supply and demand for jobs, where certain areas had a lower demand for jobseekers than others, and a reluctance among youth to work in certain fields.

Jordan ranked 6th in the Arab world, compared to a 5th place in 2020, after Syria, Djibouti, Libya, Yemen and Sudan.

As for the achieved scores, Jordan got 18.5 last year and 14.6 in 2020. The index value is calculated from 0-100.

The data indicates that Jordan has witnessed a gradual progress in the GURI from 2014 to 2018, as the scores achieved for the index in that period increased from 11.9 in 2014 to 15 in 2018.

The statistic department pointed to a decrease in the unemployment rate to 22.8 percent during the first quarter of this year, a drop of 2.2 percentage points from the first quarter of last year, and a decrease of 0.5 percentage points from the fourth quarter of last year.

For 2021, the global unemployment rate is estimated to be between 6.3–6.5 percent, depending upon the source.
