The paper said that the board was no longer considering approving new medical colleges at any public or private universities. However, it added that several Jordanian universities were preparing to apply for approval to add a number of medical disciplines, such as human and dental medicine.

Pressure has been building up to offer medical studies at Jordanian universities in order to absorb students who wish to study in the Kingdom instead of going abroad.

According to official figures, the number of students studying at Jordanian universities for the current year is about 4,000, and while another 6,000 are studying abroad.

It claimed that the number of students studying medicine could rise to 50,000 in the next five years.

Although the Cabinet has approved the establishment of three medical universities in Jordan recently, various universities have applied to open new medical and dental schools.

According to Ad-Dustour, the establishment of new medical schools requires that the university reaches an agreement with one of the top 500 universities globally to provide them with professors.
