AMMAN — A report on divorce in Jordan, conducted by the Higher Population Council covering 2015–2022, indicated that 54 percent of divorce cases in Jordan occurred with women under the age of 30.اضافة اعلان

The statistics indicate that 37.5 percent of divorce cases among those 54 percent occurred among women under the age of 26, and 16.5 percent were among women between 26–29, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.

Divorce rates
The report showed the total number of marriages in eight years was 585,429 cases, with an annual average of 73,179. Noting that, "not all married women and men were Jordanians".

The total number of divorces for the same period, after excluding divorce cases before consummation, reached 150,097 cases, with an annual average of 18,762 cases. Thus, the ratio of marriages to divorces is approximately “four marriages compared to one divorce after marriage”.

The paper suggested the crude divorce rate for divorce cases after consummation during the eight years "does not indicate a clear upward trend, but rather the rate was somewhat fluctuating depending on the data of the denominator, which is the population on which we divide the facts of divorce".

The crude divorce rate is the annual number of divorces per 1,000 of the total population, according to the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.

According to the paper, the lowest rate was 1.53 and the highest rate was 1.97 divorce cases per thousand inhabitants in 2021. This is a year in which additional divorce cases were recorded due to the closure of Sharia courts for several months in the previous year, when the lowest divorce cases were recorded as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

International statistics indicate Jordan ranked 58th globally in crude divorce rates in 2023.

Types of divorce
The report also stated, "not all divorce cases are for actually married couples”.

It added that the couples signed marriage contracts, "but the consummation or marriage had not yet taken place”.

The report also indicated that, in general, the total percentage of re-married divorced women out of the total number of marriages during the past eight years was 18.3 percent.

It added that a high percentage of the divorce cases of married women is a revocable divorce, that is, it can be retracted.

In 2022 alone, the percentage of "reactionary" divorce cases reached 23.3 percent of total cases.
