Barcelona's young talent Lamine Yamal's path to representing Spain's national team wasn't an easy one; it was preceded by a fierce sporting and diplomatic battle, in which government pressure intertwined with family wishes.

Former Spanish national team sporting director Albert Luque revealed in comments to Spain's El País that convincing Yamal to wear "La Roja" was an extremely difficult and complex task. Luque described the scale of Morocco's efforts, saying: "It wasn't easy at all. The Moroccan national team's coach traveled specifically for him."
The pressure wasn't limited to official channels; it extended into the player's inner circle. Luque acknowledged that influencing his father, Mounir Nasraoui, represented the biggest obstacle in the negotiations, describing the father's position as "the most complicated."
By contrast, the Spanish federation's discussions with his mother, Sheila Ebana, were more pragmatic in tone. Luque explained: "His mother asked us direct questions about whether we truly saw the boy as ready to play for the senior team, or whether calling him up was simply a preemptive move to block Morocco. We told her clearly that we saw him as fully ready for this challenge."
"I Want to Become European Champion"
Despite all the tug-of-war surrounding the young star, the final say in the end belonged to Lamine Yamal himself. The Catalan club's player settled the matter in a conversation with Luque with a decisive line to his negotiators: "I'm under pressure from every side, but I want to play for Spain. I want to become European champion."
Time proved the decision right, as Yamal led Spain to the Euro 2024 title, before reaching the pinnacle of football glory with them by winning the 2026 World Cup, cementing his name in the history books of world football.
Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa had previously revealed in an interview with Al Jazeera that they attempted to recruit Lamine Yamal because of his Moroccan father, saying that Walid Regragui, Morocco's former national team coach, met and spoke with him, while noting that they respected the player's decision in the end.
