Rayo opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Alvaro Garcia beat Barcelona defender Jules Kounde and played a pass into the box to Sergio Camello, who fired past goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
The defending champions equalized in the 19th minute when Raphinha received a quick pass from Xavi Espart, drove into the box, and slotted the ball into the net. Yamal, 19, then put his side ahead two minutes later with a precise left-footed strike from just outside the box that found the top corner — his 50th goal for the Catalan club.
Hansi Flick's side thought they had made it 3-1 when Kounde pounced on a rebound from Rayo goalkeeper Daniel Cardenas, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
The hosts extended their lead shortly after the break when Anthony Gordon's cross into the box was turned into his own net by Rayo defender Florian Lejeune in the 51st minute. The visitors pulled one back through a Camello header from an Unai Lopez corner in the 59th minute, but Barcelona responded again.
With 20 minutes remaining, Gordon received a long ball from Kounde, drove into the box, and set up Raphinha with a clever back-heel. The Brazilian fired the ball past Cardenas for his fifth league goal in three matches. Rayo had another chance to get back into the game in the 82nd minute, but Barcelona's goalkeeper saved a left-footed shot from midfielder Randy Nteka from the center of the box.
Barcelona completed the scoring in the 90th minute when Kerim Adeyemi played a short pass to Yamal, who curled a low shot from outside the box into the perfect corner of the net.
With the win, Barcelona top the table on nine points, ahead of Real Madrid on goal difference. Rayo Vallecano sit 18th without a win after three matches.
