Pope Francis appealed on Wednesday for Israel to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, describing the situation there as "deeply troubling and heartbreaking."

According to Reuters, during his weekly sermon at St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said:
"I renew my appeal... to allow the just entry of aid into the Strip and to end the hostilities. The heavy price is paid by children, the elderly, and the sick."
On Monday, foreign ministers from 22 countries—including France, Germany, the UK, Canada, Japan, and Australia—called on Israel to “allow the full and immediate entry of aid” into Gaza under the supervision of the United Nations and non-governmental organizations.
A joint statement from the German Foreign Ministry, reported by AFP, said that the United Nations and humanitarian organizations “cannot support” the new aid delivery mechanism to Gaza adopted by Israel.
The UN humanitarian coordinator announced that nine UN aid trucks were allowed into Gaza on Monday, describing it as “a drop in the ocean” after an 11-week siege of the Strip.
