Monday, the Israeli Supreme Court removed the law that restricts its
supervision over the government and ministers.

In an
unprecedented decision by all Supreme Court justices, eight of 15 justices
ruled that the government amendment to the so-called “reasonableness law”
should not stand. The bill had stripped the Supreme Court of the power to
declare government decisions unreasonable. It was the first major piece of a
multi-pronged plan to weaken the judiciary to be passed by the Knesset earlier
in July.
The eliminated
law is the foundation of Benjamin Netanyahu’s agenda to weaken Israel’s
judicial system.
The verdict
could reopen emotional and heated debates raging in Israel throughout 2023 but
was sidelined following October 7. It could also cause tensions within Israel’s
war cabinet.
Itamar
Ben-Gvir, the Israeli Minister of National Security, stated that canceling the
law is dangerous and undermines military efforts.
