In an interview with the Russian news agency Novosti, the doctor stated: "Stomach cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in South Korea. According to the 2023 National Cancer Registry, it ranks among the top five most frequently diagnosed types of cancer in the country."
He added: "Our analysis showed that a Helicobacter pylori infection increases the risk of stomach cancer by approximately twofold. Meanwhile, excessive alcohol consumption raises the risk by 1.5 to 2.2 times, a diet rich in salt and pickled foods increases it by 1.4 to 2 times, and smoking elevates the risk by about 1.3 to 1.8 times."
The doctor noted that the consumption of refined grains, red meat, processed meat, and high-fat dairy products are also factors that increase the likelihood of developing the disease.
It is worth noting that a team of scientists led by Professor Park Sung-soo analyzed 507 research papers from international medical databases, including PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane. They evaluated the impact of 139 factors—including diet, lifestyle, environment, medications, infections, and genetic characteristics—on the risk and prevention of stomach cancer.
