Dr. Yelena Siurakshina, an endocrinologist and nutrition expert, says that the caffeine and antioxidants found in coffee can help the body cope more effectively with the effects of physical activity.

She explained how the popular beverage affects muscle strength and under what circumstances drinking it after exercise may be beneficial.
According to Siurakshina, coffee’s main benefit lies in its combined effects on the nervous and muscular systems. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, helping reduce fatigue, while antioxidants protect cells from damage. However, debate continues in sports and medical circles over the best ways to repair muscle fibers damaged by intense exercise.
“Coffee is indeed a healthy beverage because it contains antioxidants that help cells combat oxidative stress. In addition, caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, which can improve muscle strength, reduce drowsiness and lessen feelings of weakness and overall fatigue,” she said.
She added that caffeine, when consumed alongside amino acids, can help the body restore its balance more quickly. Consuming it with carbohydrates is also acceptable, as the combination may help ease excessive muscular stress. Doctors therefore emphasize the importance of consuming caffeine in appropriate amounts, not only as part of a healthy lifestyle but potentially in support of longevity.
However, the doctor warned that digestive health is an important factor. People diagnosed with atrophic gastritis or those who suffer from acid-related problems may be better off avoiding coffee after exercise. Excessive consumption of energy drinks can also sometimes cause cramps and dehydration, making it important to maintain proper fluid balance.
“If a person tolerates coffee well and does not have stomach problems, such as increased acidity, H. pylori infection or atrophic gastritis, they can drink it. But if there is inflammation or symptoms such as heartburn, heaviness or discomfort, it is better to avoid coffee,” she said.
The doctor also stressed that the same precautions apply to people experiencing flare-ups of chronic conditions. Physicians may advise against coffee in certain cases, particularly for people with cardiovascular disease.
It is also important to take the body's overall level of stress into account. In some cases, severe exhaustion may be mistaken for ordinary fatigue, when it may actually result from significant sensory or physiological stress that calls for adequate rest rather than additional stimulation.
