The World Bank announced today, Friday, the resumption of its development programs in Syria, after both the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar settled overdue debts owed by Damascus, amounting to approximately $15.5 million. This paved the way for the international institution to return to operating inside the country after a 14-year pause.

In an official statement reported by CNN, the World Bank said: “After years of conflict, Syria is on the path to recovery and development,” noting that the first projects planned to be implemented in cooperation with the Syrian government will focus on improving electricity services.
A spokesperson for the bank explained that clearing the arrears represents a fundamental step to reactivate cooperation with Syria, emphasizing that the new programs will contribute to enhancing stability inside Syria and the wider region. The focus will be on creating a conducive environment for investment and encouraging the private sector, thereby helping to generate jobs and achieve growth.
This development comes alongside the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the lifting of American sanctions imposed on Syria.
