Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China "strongly opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that lack any basis in international law and have not been authorized by the Security Council," asserting that "China will take all necessary measures to firmly defend the legitimate rights and interests of its companies."
U.S. senators announced on Friday that they had reached an agreement with President Donald Trump on a bill targeting countries that purchase Russian energy products, a move that could pave the way for stronger pressure on Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
Republican Senators Lindsey Graham and Roger Wicker, along with Democratic Senators Richard Blumenthal and Jeanne Shaheen, said in a joint statement that they expect to unveil the updated legislation "very soon."
The statement read: "As Russia intensifies its massacres against civilians, it is imperative that the legislative and executive branches work together to create tools that impose a heavy price on those who buy Russian oil and natural gas and fuel Putin's war machine."
The measure had been under negotiation for months but struggled to advance amid a lukewarm reaction from the White House and Trump’s fluctuating stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The legislation would grant the president the authority to impose tariffs and sanctions on countries that continue to purchase Russian energy products, which serve as a vital source of revenue for the Russian war effort.
