Key Highlights from the Minister of Energy:
Natural Gas: Expansion of natural gas use with networks for Amman and Zarqa to be ready by 2030.
Renewable Energy: Currently contributes 27% to the electrical grid, with plans to exceed 30% by 2030.
Green Hydrogen: Production is expected to commence by 2030.
Consumption: Energy efficiency is a priority; the residential sector accounts for 49% of electricity consumption.
Strategic Infrastructure Projects
Minister of Energy Saleh Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that the updated 2025–2035 strategy focuses on diversifying energy sources and increasing reliance on domestic resources. A major pillar of this plan is the Risha Gas Field, where 80 new wells are currently being drilled. Production is projected to reach 418 million cubic feet (mcf) per day by 2029, coinciding with the project to link the field to the Arab Gas Pipeline.
To support the industrial sector, the Ministry is working to convert numerous industries to natural gas to reduce operational costs and enhance global competitiveness.
Renewables and Future Energy
Al-Kharabsheh noted that Jordan’s renewable energy share is one of the highest in the region at 27%, with a long-term goal of reaching 50% through ongoing generation and energy storage projects. Furthermore, the Ministry is positioning Jordan as a regional hub for Green Hydrogen, with the first production phase slated for 2030.
Efficiency and Consumption Challenges
The Minister raised concerns regarding energy intensity, noting that Jordan’s energy consumption rate is 25% higher than the global average. With the residential sector consuming nearly half of the country’s electricity, the Ministry is prioritizing national energy-saving awareness to improve efficiency and bolster energy security.
Parliamentary Support
MP Ayman Abu Hania and committee members emphasized the importance of lowering energy costs for businesses and households. They discussed revising electricity tariff brackets and accelerating the Abu Khashiba agreement and other legislations related to the gas and electricity sectors to stimulate economic growth.
