Intensive contacts in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings have revived hopes of breaking the deadlock in US-Iran negotiations, as Tehran presented Washington with an official proposal outlining specific conditions for resuming talks and discussions emerged about a phased process to end the war.
A US official said Washington had held constructive discussions with Tehran through intermediaries, confirming that nuclear issues were still being discussed.
In New York, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had presented Washington with a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic within seven days, alongside discussions on the conditions for ending the war and reopening the vital waterway.
On Tuesday, Araghchi met with US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, after setting conditions for ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
In the same context, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said Doha held indirect talks between Tehran and Washington on Thursday and made progress, noting that Qatar had sensed a willingness on both sides to advance the negotiations.
Sheikh Mohammed called for an end to the use of waterways as a means of pressuring countries and imposing faits accomplis, describing the situation in the Strait of Hormuz as unacceptable.
He said the blockade imposed on the Strait of Hormuz was putting pressure on Iran and also placing pressure on countries across the region, noting that developments in the strait were not affecting Tehran alone but the entire world.
He added that Qatar had made efforts to put the diplomatic process back on the right track.
As part of regional efforts, Araghchi met with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Araghchi briefed him on the understanding reached between Tehran and the Sultanate of Oman regarding safe maritime corridors in the Strait of Hormuz.
He affirmed Iran’s determination to build confidence, particularly regarding security mechanisms based on cooperation among regional countries, expressing hope that key regional parties would participate in these efforts.
Araghchi also met with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil El-Sisi and discussed regional developments, particularly the situations in Palestine and Lebanon.
He reaffirmed Tehran’s determination to strengthen confidence among regional countries, calling for intensified dialogue and communication between Iran and Arab states. He said regional security should be viewed as an integrated concept based on shared responsibility and constructive engagement.
The Arab League secretary-general expressed hope that regional efforts and an expanded dialogue would help strengthen trust and cooperation among the countries of the region.
In earlier remarks several days ago, the Qatari prime minister said energy was a source of strength for his country and diversification was the foundation of its resilience, while technology represented its future. He stressed that Qatar would not allow short-term disruptions to determine its trajectory despite the prevailing uncertainty.
He added that Qatar was moving forward by investing in reform, strengthening its resilience and creating new opportunities for growth, stressing that it would remain a committed partner in mediation, a reliable energy supplier and an investment partner.
He also said Qatar’s financial system had continued to operate and that companies had continued their activities despite what had occurred.
