Eight US Navy personnel assigned to the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group attempted suicide during a deployment that included combat operations against Iran, while the aircraft carrier also set a recent record for the length of time it remained at sea, according to a letter from the acting Secretary of the Navy obtained by CNN.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao disclosed the previously unreported figure in written responses to questions from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand concerning the morale and mental health of personnel serving aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.
Cao confirmed in the letter that there were no completed suicides among service members during the deployment.
“Since the beginning of the Lincoln deployment, a total of eight suicide attempts have been recorded,” Cao wrote in a letter to Gillibrand on Tuesday. Gillibrand, a Democrat, serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
He added that the figure included personnel serving aboard the Lincoln, sailors from the carrier’s air wing, the strike group command staff and destroyer squadron, crews of accompanying destroyers, and all aviation squadrons deployed aboard the ships.
