AMMAN — All UNRWA staff will hold sit-ins on November 16 to protest management ignoring their demands, the UN agency’s General Conference of Workers’ Unions agreed Sunday, according to Al-Ghad News.اضافة اعلان

The UN agency’s 28,000 employees, including 7,000 in the Kingdom, will sit in protest for an hour at their workplaces, this will be followed by a two-hour sit-in for UNRWA staff in all their workplaces. The sit-ins will coincide with the convening of the donor countries’ conference.

The heads of the unions stressed that providing funds for the continuation of UNRWA’s work and serving the Palestinian refugees is the responsibility of the donor countries and the international community, and should not be at the expense of workers’ rights.

They also valued “the role of the host countries’ governments in helping Palestinian refugees and supporting the agency”.

The unions’ heads criticized UNRWA management’s threats to employees to deprive them of wages if they carry out protest activities, stressing that “the threats will not discourage employees from confronting these decisions up to an open strike, which is a means and not an end.”

The UNRWA workers’ unions in Jordan reaffirmed its rejection of their management’s decision to give special leave without pay.

The unions said that the UN agency is risking the futures of half a million students, including 125,000 students from schools, colleges, and universities in Jordan.

They said that the Agency’s management has failed in its duties towards the Palestinian refugee community in Jordan by not having an emergency fund that covers the shortfall in the budget.

UNRWA employees are demanding management stop the decision to give special leave without pay, to pay them their salaries for the current and following month on time, start hiring staff, cancel the daily work system, provide staff with clinics with medical staff, and appoint replacements for employees who leave.
