AMMAN — The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) asked that attempted suicide not be penalized, according to Al-Rai News.

Amendments to the Penal Code passed on Monday penalizes attempted suicide in public places by either imprisonment or a fine, or both. The law also specifies that in case of attempted mass suicide the punishment will increase.اضافة اعلان

NCHR stressed that international human rights standards and legislative practices do not penalize attempted suicide, stressing that those who commit this action must have social, health, mental, and institutional support.

As such, the NCHR called for abolishing this bill and tackling the reasons that make on attempt suicide, such as the economic situation, in addition to developing a social and health institutional mechanism to rehabilitate these people and integrate them in society.
