Ministry works to combat diabetes, obesity among schoolchildren

AMMAN — Deputizing for Princess Muna Al-Hussein, Minister of Health Firas Al-Hawari inaugurated the activities of the health camp for children with type 1 diabetes, which is being held at a tourist resort by the Nurses Syndicate under the slogan “Together we beat diabetes” and will last for four days, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.اضافة اعلان

A statement by the Ministry of Health on Saturday cited Hawari as saying that the ministry is cooperating with the Ministry of Education and the Royal Health Awareness Society to prepare a campaign to change societal behavior and prevent obesity among school students, given the importance of health education in preventing, treating, and reducing the complications arising from obesity and  beingoverweight.

Hawari added that helping families deal with children with diabetes is urgently needed to mitigate the psychological and social effects of this disease, and will positively affect the children’s health, enabling them to live a healthy life.

The minister praised the Nurses Syndicate’s efforts in setting up the camp, expressing hope that it will be a pioneering experience that could be generalized to include all children suffering from this disease, adding that type 1 and 2 diabetes, “threaten many children in the world” due to the change in lifestyle and food, and the high rates of obesity among children, and that the Ministry of Health is exerting much effort to prevent this disease, and is working hard to combat it through many plans and programs aimed at reducing the consumption of food rich in sugar and saturated fats.
