IRBID — Eid Al-Adha begins next Tuesday for a second time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the government's gradual easing of defense laws, life in Jordan is not what it used to be.اضافة اعلان

In Irbid, COVID-related worries have prevailed among Jordanians, but the customs and traditions of Irbid’s residents have not completely disappeared.

When asked in a phone call about his thoughts on eid in Irbid, Basem Al-Quwaider from the border town of Ramtha, north of Irbid, said: “Things are not quite the way they were, but that does not mean that I will not visit my family. I will not stay as long as I used to. Last eid was very quiet — I hope this time will be better."

"The sheep arrived in the town of Ramtha last week, and the residents welcomed them with joy,” he said. “Here in Ramtha, we give these occasions great importance, and we rejoice in them a lot, and I do not expect that we will be able to abandon these traditions."

In another interview with Jordan News, Farah Al-Momani from the town of An Nu'yymah, south of Irbid, said: "This eid will definitely be better than previous year. The government has allowed restaurants and parks to receive visitors, so the holiday will be more joyful for children and adults alike.”

Despite the expressions of joy, trader Osama Al-Masry said regarding the clothing market in particular that "there is a weak movement in the market, and the entry of goods across the border is still slow and in very small quantities. Traders don't expect the situation to get better. It will take a long time for people to return to their previous lifestyles.”

Alternatively, Sham Akef said: "I don't think it will be too bad this year compared to previous years, as people are more accustomed to healthy habits, and this is actually a good thing. I feel that this is how it should be all the time, and not just on eid or other occasions.”

As the eid holiday approaches, government and health experts are repeatedly urging citizens to abide by COVID-19 safety measures. Eid Al-Adha is typically full of extended family visits, warm embraces, and the sharing of food. Irbid recorded 49 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, out of a total of 475 confirmed new cases across the country.

“We want citizens to enjoy eid while following health and safety measures, and we count on the awareness of the educated, committed citizen,” Minister of State for Media Affairs Sakher Dudin told Hayat FM radio on Thursday.
