AMMAN — On Wednesday, Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Ahmad Hanandeh confirmed that three companies have
been qualified for the bid to launch electronic passport services, Khaberni
reported.
The current phase involves objections and
legal extensions for objections, with financial bids opening at the end of the
objection period, Hanandeh said in a statement to Al-Mamlaka TV.
The Ministry initiated a local and
international tender in May 2023 for companies to submit technical proposals
for launching electronic passport services in Jordan.
Hanandeh emphasized the natural progression
from traditional passports to electronic ones, equipped with chips for easy
data upload, biometric fingerprints, and various reading methods. He also
asserted the impossibility of forging electronic passport data, highlighting
its essential requirement for entry into many countries. Furthermore, he
clarified that the widespread use of electronic passports is expected to
facilitate travel procedures at airports and establishments that mandate
passport verification.
