Safi, Morocco – Twenty-one people lost their lives yesterday (Sunday) in the coastal city of Safi on the Atlantic Ocean due to severe flooding caused by sudden heavy rainfall, local authorities reported.

According to a statement from the authorities, Safi, located about 300 kilometers south of Rabat, experienced intense thunderstorms that triggered extraordinary flash floods within just one hour.
Earlier reports indicated that 32 people were injured and taken to the city hospital, most of whom have since been discharged after receiving treatment, according to Agence France-Presse.
Authorities stated that the floodwaters submerged 70 homes and commercial establishments in Safi’s old city, swept away 10 vehicles, and damaged sections of roads, disrupting traffic.
Images circulating on social media showed a torrent of muddy water rushing through Safi’s streets, carrying cars and debris. Other footage showed a partially submerged mausoleum and Civil Defense boats responding to residents’ rescue calls.
Authorities confirmed that search efforts for potential missing persons are ongoing, and they are working to secure affected areas and provide support and aid to those impacted.
Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Meteorology announced on Saturday snowfall in high-altitude areas above 1,700 meters, along with heavy rain and occasional storms in several regions of the kingdom over the weekend. On Sunday evening, the Directorate warned of heavy rain accompanied by localized storms (40–60 mm) expected on Tuesday across the country.
