Novo Nordisk, a leading global healthcare company headquartered in Denmark and known for its expertise in diabetes and obesity care, today announced the launch of Wegovy®️ (semaglutide 2.4 mg) in Jordan, expanding treatment options for people living with excess weight.
The announcement was made during a press event in Amman attended by healthcare professionals, weight management experts, and media representatives. Following authorization by the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA), Wegovy®️ is now available in Jordan, providing patients and healthcare professionals with access to an innovative, evidence-based treatment option
The event was attended by Ms. Mais Batarseh, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Levant, along with Khoury Drug Store (Novo Nordisk's local distributor). Distinguished speakers also included Dr. Faris Haddad, President of the Jordan Society for Endocrinology and Diabetes; Dr. Safwan Dababneh, Director of the Noncommunicable Disease Directorate at the Ministry of Health; and Dr. Zeid Al-Kilani, President of the Jordan Pharmacists Association.
Speaking at the event, Mais Batarseh highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating, "Today's launch reflects our commitment to bringing new hope for people across Jordan who are living with weight challenges by expanding access to advanced, approved treatment options. It marks a meaningful step towards healthier, fuller lives—in other words, living lighter."
Dr. Safwan Dababneh, one of the most prominent public health concerns in the country, affecting around 60% of adults¹, stressed that sustained awareness and evidence-based approaches are essential to improving long-term health outcomes and that expanding access to authorized treatment options supports national efforts to address this growing burden¹.
Dr. Faris Haddad, underlined the wide-ranging health impact associated with excess weight, explained that it is linked to multiple serious conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, respiratory problems, and certain types of cancer, as well as affecting mental health and overall well-being. He highlighted the importance of access to effective and authorized treatment options to support healthcare professionals in delivering comprehensive weight management care
Dr. Zeid Al-Kilani emphasized the importance of integrated healthcare efforts, noting that the availability of Wegovy®️ in Jordan represents a significant step toward a more proactive and patient-centered healthcare system. He highlighted the critical role of pharmacists in ensuring safe access to innovative therapies, supporting patient adherence, and working collaboratively with healthcare professionals to improve health outcomes and strengthen comprehensive care across the country. Overweight and obesity represent a growing health challenge with a significant impact on individuals' health, wellbeing, and daily lives, while also placing increasing pressure on healthcare systems. Globally, close to 1 billion people are living with obesity, making it one of the most pressing health concerns of our time.
In Jordan, data from the Higher Population Council and the Global Nutrition Report 2024-2026 indicate that approximately 60% of adults in Jordan are classified as either overweight or obese, highlighting the need for comprehensive, evidence-based approaches to weight management.

Wegovy®️ (semaglutide 2.4 mg) is a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA), indicated for chronic weight management in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and above.
Semaglutide 2.4 mg helps reduce appetite by increasing feelings of fullness and satiety, while lowering hunger and food intake.
Clinical evidence supports its role as part of a comprehensive treatment approach. The STEP clinical trial program demonstrated that semaglutide 2.4 mg, as an adjunct to lifestyle intervention, resulted in significant and sustained weight loss compared with placebo, with mean reductions of approximately 21% in adults with obesity or overweight
In addition to weight loss, the SELECT clinical study including 17,604 adults with a BMI ≥27 kg/m2 demonstrated that Wegovy®️ (Semaglutide 2.4 mg) resulted in a statistically significant 20% risk reduction in cardiovascular death, heart attacks, and stroke in adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease, without T2DM.
Taken together, these findings support the role of semaglutide 2.4 mg as part of a comprehensive approach to weight management, helping individuals pursue and maintain their health goals over time.
