Moscow came under an unusually large-scale attack overnight from Saturday into Sunday, involving 600 drones and leaving three people injured, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.
Sobyanin said on the government-backed Max platform that “from yesterday evening until 6:30 a.m. (3:30 a.m. GMT) today, 600 drones were flying toward the Moscow region, of which 201 were destroyed.” The attack came as Ukraine has intensified strikes deep inside Russian territory, particularly targeting energy facilities and e-commerce infrastructure.
Explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, early Sunday following a Russian ballistic missile attack that injured at least one person, according to authorities.
An Agence France-Presse correspondent reported hearing explosions shortly before 3 a.m. local time (midnight GMT), as Ukrainian authorities issued air-raid warnings for the capital.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported “explosions in the capital,” saying the city was “under attack by ballistic missiles.”
He later reported fires at three locations in the capital, affecting non-residential buildings.
At least one person was injured in the attack, according to an initial report by the local military administration.
Authorities in Kryvyi Rih, an industrial city in central Ukraine and the birthplace of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, also reported that two industrial facilities had come under Russian strikes.
Regional Governor Oleksandr Hanja said one person was killed and six others were injured.
As Russia increasingly relies on long-range missiles in its war against Ukraine, Kyiv has responded with drone attacks targeting areas deep inside Russian territory.
Russia launched a record number of missiles at Ukraine in July, according to an AFP analysis of daily reports issued by the Ukrainian Air Force. Kyiv has been pressing U.S. President Donald Trump to provide additional air-defense systems to help repel the attacks.
According to a report by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, last month was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since May 2022, with 437 people killed and 2,610 injured.
Kyiv was particularly hard hit, with at least 54 people killed and 202 injured.
At the beginning of August, a series of attacks on the city killed at least 17 people in Kyiv and surrounding areas, while Ukraine, which is facing a shortage of interceptor missiles, failed to shoot down any Russian missiles.
Since the beginning of the year, the United Nations has recorded 12,477 civilian casualties—including 1,839 deaths and 10,638 injuries—an increase of 44% compared with the same period last year and more than double the figure recorded in 2024.
