GAZA – Indiscriminate shelling in the Gaza Strip has led to
the loss of pregnant women's fetuses. A large number of them have been killed,
and others have suffered miscarriages since the beginning of the Israeli
aggression on the Strip, according to Al Quds Press.
The United Nations Population Fund in Palestine estimated
that there are 50,000 pregnant women in the Gaza Strip, including 5,000
pregnant women who are expected to give birth this month.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza has had to partially close
maternity departments in hospitals and convert them into reception and
emergency departments, as well as operating rooms for treating the injured.
A number of doctors in maternity departments in the
remaining Gaza hospitals have affirmed that "the occupation has used
internationally prohibited weapons, including white phosphorus bombs, which,
upon explosion, release toxic gasses. When inhaled, these gasses lead to
deformities in fetuses and neurological disorders in pregnant women, causing
early miscarriages or the birth of deformed babies."
