New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a one-year ban on the use of generative AI tools in the city's public elementary and middle schools.
According to CNN, the decision covers roughly 600,000 students across elementary and middle school levels in public schools, in one of the largest school districts in the United States.
By contrast, high school students will be permitted to use AI in certain cases, and teachers will be allowed to use it for lesson planning and tasks such as organizing schedules.
The decision to suspend students' use of AI marks the latest step by public officials seeking to set guardrails around the use of new technologies inside classrooms.
It is described as the strictest measure of its kind in the United States so far, even as other school districts, including Los Angeles, have said they are currently reviewing their own AI-related policies.
Mayor Mamdani told reporters that schools will halt current use of around 40 educational tools across New York City classrooms.
At a press conference, he said children need teachers and human interaction in order to learn and grow, adding that they need to develop their skills alongside their peers, build relationships with teachers, and work through difficult problems on their own.
New York City's public schools had previously imposed a temporary ban on the use of ChatGPT shortly after its 2022 launch, but that restriction was later lifted and replaced with a dedicated AI-based teaching assistant, according to Microsoft.
