Social media platforms are an inexhaustible source of inspiration, but not everything published online should be believed. There are many widespread tech hacks that are best avoided.

For instance, toothpaste cannot fix a cracked phone screen, and a USB-C port should never be cleaned with hot glue—or at the very least, it is strongly advised against.
You may have come across YouTube videos of people using hot glue guns to clean their phones' USB-C ports. They inject glue into the port, stir it with a thin tool, let it dry, and then pull it out, according to a report by the tech news site BGR.
If the process goes correctly, the glue is supposed to pick up dust and trapped particles, much like hot wax removes unwanted hair.
Why It's a Terrible Idea
Logically, this is a very bad idea. While USB-C is an evolution over previous USB ports in terms of connectivity and functionality, it remains a delicate piece of hardware. Hot glue could accidentally pull out sensitive internal components, potentially rendering the phone unable to charge.
Even if you don't break anything inside the port while removing the hardened glue, you risk the glue tearing, leaving a solid mass that clogs the port. While this isn't as catastrophic as ripping out a pin, it still leaves an obstruction that prevents the charging cable from connecting properly. Removing such a blockage would be nearly impossible without professional technical assistance, defeating the purpose of the hack entirely.
Safer Methods to Clean Your Port
Given the amount of lint and glue residue shown in these videos, it’s hard to believe they aren't staged. While dust, dirt, and sand can accumulate in your USB-C port during normal use, it is unlikely to become completely clogged. Dirt buildup happens over months or years, not days.
If you truly need to clean your USB-C or any other port, you don’t need hot glue. The easiest and safest methods include:
Compressed Air: Directing air into the port to dislodge loose debris.
Thin Plastic Tools: A simple hack is using a thin, non-conductive plastic tool, such as a coffee stirrer, to gently remove trapped lint.
Dust Plugs: If you are uncomfortable cleaning the port yourself, consider purchasing a dust plug. These prevent dust and lint from accumulating in the first place. You can buy them separately, or find phone cases with built-in port covers.
