Study Findings:
Published in the International journal, the study found that bergamot leaf extract (Citrus bergamia) helps restore metabolic balance in the body and protects the liver from obesity-related conditions.
In experiments, rats with induced obesity were given bergamot extract over several weeks. Researchers observed:
Improved fat metabolism
Reduced total cholesterol and triglycerides
Increased “good” HDL cholesterol
Weight loss and decreased overall fat mass
Mechanism:
Biochemical analyses revealed that bergamot extract has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
It lowers reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokines in liver cells, helping slow the progression of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a major obesity-related liver complication.
Next Steps:
Researchers plan to conduct clinical trials in humans to determine optimal dosing and ensure long-term safety.
