The mural was conceived, designed, supervised and executed by artist Dr. Raeda Al-Awamleh, whose artistic vision focuses on using mosaic art to narrate the history of Al-Salt and transform stone into a visual language that preserves the memory of the place for future generations.
The project is being carried out in cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Culture through its “Tamkeen” program and is considered one of the largest innovative mosaic murals in the Kingdom, bringing together art, heritage, volunteerism and cultural documentation.
Al-Awamleh said the mural measures 50 meters in length and 2.5 meters in height, with approximately 3.75 million mosaic pieces set to be installed, with a total weight of nearly two tons.
The massive artwork requires a high level of precision and craftsmanship, as well as extensive training and implementation efforts.
The project also has a strong community and national dimension, with volunteers from different governorates across Jordan taking part.
So far, around 210 volunteers have been trained in mosaic-making techniques and have contributed to producing sections of the mural, reinforcing the concept of community participation and making the project a national experience involving Jordanians from across the Kingdom.
Al-Awamleh noted that the mural will be installed at the entrance to Al-Salt, in a location where residents and visitors will be able to see and engage with it.
It is intended to serve as a visual gateway telling the story of the city and presenting its historical and cultural narrative through the enduring language of stone, while adding a new artistic landmark to the city’s cultural and tourism landscape.
The project goes beyond being a mosaic artwork, she said, as its philosophy is based on the concept of “building Al-Salt through the language of stone.” Millions of small pieces will come together to form a single artwork carrying the city’s memory and telling aspects of its identity, heritage and place in Jordanian history.
Al-Awamleh said the project also contributes to documenting the second centenary of the Jordanian state through a contemporary artwork that draws on Al-Salt’s heritage and places it within a permanent visual space.
The mural is intended to stand as an artistic witness to a chapter of Jordan’s history and demonstrate the ability of Jordanian art to preserve national memory and present it to future generations.
The total cost of designing and implementing the mural exceeds JD120,000, with the largest share of the project’s financial support being provided personally by Dr. Raeda Al-Awamleh.
She said the contribution reflects her belief in the artist’s role in serving the country and community and her commitment to providing what is necessary to complete a national artistic project befitting Al-Salt and Jordan.
Al-Awamleh emphasized that the project is not merely an artistic work, but a cultural and artistic contribution aimed at enhancing the country’s heritage and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
The mural is intended to remain a witness to an important period in Jordan’s history and demonstrate how art can document national memory and transform it into a lasting visual heritage.
Located at the city’s entrance, the mural will also serve as a welcoming message to visitors, presenting the Jordanian narrative of Al-Salt through the enduring language of stone.
The project brings together art, identity, heritage and volunteerism, while introducing a new approach to using mosaic as a tool for cultural documentation and national storytelling.
