Speaking during a specialized lecture organized by the Jordanian Society for Scientific Research, Entrepreneurship and Creativity on Wednesday evening on the specialized fertilizer industry in Jordan, Al-Bass explained that fertilizers are a fundamental component of modern agriculture. They supply plants with essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, in addition to micronutrients, which improves productivity and crop quality.
He noted that the fertilizer industry is divided into conventional and specialized fertilizers. Conventional fertilizers are used in large-scale agriculture and account for about 90% of global production, while specialized fertilizers are used in modern and intensive farming systems, particularly irrigated agriculture, and make up around 10% of global production.
Al-Bass pointed out that Jordan’s fertilizer industry comprises around 50 industrial facilities and provides more than 3,000 direct job opportunities. He added that the total value of the sector’s output is estimated at nearly $1 billion, with a value-added ratio of approximately 69% of total production, reflecting the depth of local manufacturing in this sector.
He explained that the specialized fertilizer industry contributes to improving the efficiency of fertilizer and water use and enhancing the management of agricultural inputs, in line with the shift toward sustainable agriculture and the adoption of modern production technologies.
Al-Bass also addressed the main challenges facing the sector, foremost among them high production costs, rising raw material prices, and the limited size of the local market, which necessitate efforts to develop products and enhance their competitiveness.
He stressed the importance of supporting specialized chemical industries and providing a favorable investment environment for their growth, given the positive impact this would have on increasing value added to national industries and supporting related productive sectors.
Al-Bass concluded by emphasizing that the specialized fertilizer industry represents a real opportunity to strengthen integration between the industrial and agricultural sectors and to support sustainable economic development in the Kingdom.
The lecture, moderated by the Society’s President Dr. Reda Al-Khawaldeh, included several questions and interventions highlighting the importance and vitality of the sector and the need to support and further develop it.
