Trump wishes to renegotiate the terms of the agreement, which he considers detrimental to United States interests, and has threatened to withdraw from the accord that also includes Canada.

Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said in a statement: "We discussed the rules of origin for products, the automotive sector, how to compete with Asian countries and other regions of the world, and how to strengthen and improve our economic integration," according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The Mexican delegation welcomed the outcome of the meeting, describing it as "positive," and noted that the U.S. negotiators focused on "reducing the trade deficit with Mexico and strengthening U.S. supply chains."

This agreement is of paramount importance to Mexico, as 80% of its exports are destined for the United States.

A new round of negotiations is scheduled to take place in June in Washington, followed by another round in July in Mexico City.
