During the session, chaired by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, members will listen to briefings from the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Middle East Affairs, Mohamed Khiyar, and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

Algeria distributed a memorandum outlining the objectives of the meeting, which include: evaluating the current state of cooperation between the UN and the Arab League in addressing ongoing regional crises, identifying practical methods to benefit from the expertise of the Security Council and the Arab League in conflict prevention and resolution, considering strategies and mechanisms for effectively addressing ongoing regional challenges in both the short and long term, exploring ways to develop a joint approach to humanitarian assistance and civilian protection, and looking at mechanisms to address the regional impacts of conflicts.

The memorandum also presents questions to guide the discussion among members, such as how the Security Council and the Arab League can better coordinate their efforts to address the multiple crises affecting the Arab region, what practical steps the UN and the Arab League can take to enhance their joint capabilities to prevent and resolve conflicts in response to emerging regional challenges, and how the Security Council and the Arab League can develop more effective mechanisms to implement Council decisions.

The Council is expected to issue a presidential statement on the cooperation between the two parties.
